Teenagers with ADHD can experience emotions more intensely and more quickly than their peers. What can look like anger, overreacting, shutting down, or even defiance is often a young person becoming overwhelmed in the moment, without the ability to pause, process or respond differently.

This session looks at what's underneath those reactions. We’ll look at how ADHD affects emotional regulation and decision-making, and the role of brain development in shaping how teens respond in the moment. When this part of the brain is still developing, it can be harder for young people to manage impulses, think ahead, or hold perspective, especially under pressure.

We’ll also talk about why some teens move quickly into fight, flight, freeze or avoidance behaviours, and how puberty can further influence mood, reactivity and day-to-day responses.

We'll discuss what parents can do. From recognising the emotion underneath the behaviour, to responding in ways that reduce escalation rather than add to it, we’ll look at practical ways to support teens both in the moment and over time. The aim is not to remove big emotions, but to help parents better understand them so they can support their teens in making sense of their responses, without shame or labelling, while gradually building the skills they need to manage them.
