Reflecting on appropriate curriculum activities for community events, through the lens of Easter
Easter is almost upon us, making it the perfect moment to reflect on how we approach community events in early childhood curriculum: not just Easter, but St Patrick's Day, Harmony Day, Anzac Day, Halloween and beyond.
In this practical, reflective webinar, host Sithmi Rajapaksa is joined by guest speaker Sellina McCluskey, founder of MECS and early childhood education consultant with over 30 years of experience, to explore how we can move from tokenistic celebrations to meaningful, inclusive curriculum planning that honours the diverse communities we serve.
Together, they'll unpack:
- Why include community events in our curriculum, and when might we choose not to?
- How to support the interests and needs of diverse children, families and communities
- Moving from tokenism to genuine inclusion and authentic representation
- Planning in ways that support both individual and group needs
- Tapping into the power of provocations for educators, not just children
The session will run for 45 minutes, including time for audience questions, discussion and shared practice.
This is a reflective, idea-focused session for early childhood educators and leaders wanting to approach community celebrations with intention, confidence and cultural responsiveness.

Support Lead & ECT
I’m Sithmi, an early childhood teacher who began working in the sector at 19 alongside my sisters, first inspired by a shared love of bringing joy to children. This grew into a deep understanding of the importance of the early years and the powerful impact high-quality early learning has on children’s development. With a background in science and early childhood education, my teaching has always embraced curiosity, hands-on learning, and playful exploration to foster a love of learning. At Mana, I support services to strengthen quality practice and documentation through thoughtfully designed tools that empower educators and support the best possible outcomes for children.
